Fans start getting bored when a sportsman tells a journalist "The Olympics are the most important event in my life". Now we know better what lies behind those well-worn words. For three months our film crew had to find gaps in the unbelievably intense schedule of Russians preparing for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Our task was made more difficult by the fact that we did not want to portray the competitors as supermen and superwomen in sporting "armour", bearing medals to the altar of the Fatherland, but as husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, friends - during their short periods at home with their nearest and dearest.
